This is a point-based category where points are awarded for skilled employment, age, qualification, skilled work experience and bonus points for partners included in the Expression of Interest (EOI). A claim of points is made through an EOI and if the applicant has the required total points (currently 160), then the EOI is selected from the pool on a fortnightly basis.
After the EOI is selected, an "Invitation to Apply" ("ITA") is issued by INZ which is valid for 4 months to allow the applicant to lodge the Residence Application. At this stage, the claim of points made in the EOI needs to be validated through evidence. Verification is undertaken at this stage to confirm that points claimed by applicants.
Job offers, work experience are thoroughly verified by Immigration to determine whether they meet the policy requirements. Historically, only occupations listed on the list of skilled occupations (LOSO) which are ANZSCO Skill level 1, 2 or 3 qualified for Residence under this category. However, from August 2017, occupations not listed on LOSO or ANZSCO Skill Level 4 and above ALSO qualify under this category if they earn a salary of $36.44 per hour.
Family members included in the Residence application must undergo verification and maybe an interview to ascertain whether they meet the requirements. English language requirement, health and Character are crucial requirements to be met.
In our experience, many people incorrectly calculate themselves as having bonus points which they do not qualify for.
