The ADLS Immigration and Refugee Law Committee was pleased to host the Annual ADLS Immigration Law dinner at the Northern Club on Wednesday 6 June 2018. Legal Associates was represented by Taufiq Chauduhry.
The event was well-attended by a good cross-section of the judiciary, OCs, practitioners, and immigration advisers.
It was the first dinner for the new Minister of Immigration, the Hon lain Lees-Galloway, who carefully outlined the new directions being pursued. The Committee was pleased that these included a number of matters on which they had been advocating, such as rights of exploited workers and trafficked persons, and concerns about international students and their ability to remain in New Zealand after their study.
The Minister assured the Committee and those in attendance that there would be full and meaningful consultation with practitioners in this area of the law regarding upcoming developments and policy changes. The Minister kindly took a number of questions - so many in fact that the Northern Club had to begin serving the dessert while he took his last question, as the ice cream was in danger of melting.
ADLS' Immigration Law dinner provides a wonderful opportunity for collegiality for the immigration and refugee bar - a bar which is under increasing stress and pressure. Many attendees commented on how much they enjoyed the evening and how engaging the Minister was. We look forward to hosting another successful event next year.
